In an era where rappers spit more anger than aggression, sing more than they freestyle and spit tales instead of facts, Ottawa based rapper Belly (a.k.a Rebellyus) is bringing hip-hop out of the clouds and back to the streets.

Feeling embarrassed about the lack of a rap scene in Ottawa, his frustration turned into motivation thus propelling him into the studio. Armed with his word play, natural ability to count bars and arrange beats, Belly began recording track after track, then fate intervened. At a young age, he met Tony Sal (CEO of Capital Prophet Records) who gave him guidance , and the power to reach a lot more people in the city. Belly took the opportunity and spoke whatever was on his mind. That’s when the controversy began.

After creating a bit of controversy in Ottawa with his open views of Canadian urban music, Belly credits his street credibility to the realness he lets loose in his rhymes. “A lot of rappers in Canada rap about the type of life they want, not what they’re really living. A real man can spot a fake a mile away. Canadian artists need to stop taking this rap s**t as a hobby and bring it back to the old school hustle, they’re too lazy. Everybody needs to stop being so envious, and they can start by trying to better themselves.”

Recognizing the splendor of everyday life isn’t something that most rappers talk about, but Belly has seen the flipside and it ain’t pretty. At 20, he has traveled the world from the Middle East to the Dirty South. His EP sold 5000 + copy’s on the streets of Canada’s capital (a city best known for it’s politicians), he has rejected major label record deals, he even made history with his first two mix-tapes and he feels as though he has accomplished nothing! “I’m proud of what I’ve done, but I see so much more in front of me that when I stop and think about it, this is just the beginning.”

Part of Belly’s hussle is having the Capital Prophet street team actively distributing and selling his mixed CD’s coast to coast. CD’s such as Death Before Dishonor vol.1
have gotten him enough credibility to do volume 2 with Kay Slay (the drama king).

Since returning to Canada after a year-and-a-half in the States, Belly has taken his experiences and converted them into a life-long lesson.“ The problems don’t stop once you get into this industry, but people should never regret anything that happens to them. Take me for example, I don’t know where I’d be and what I’d be rapping about if I didn’t live the life I live. The pain is part of the game.”

Be sure to check out Belly’s latest mix tape, Death Before Dishonor vol.2, presented by Kay Slay. Belly’s debut album is scheduled for release in 2006.
