European gaming powerhouse Betsson successfully applied for an online gaming and betting licence in Greece. As a result, the Hellenic Gaming Commission granted rights for games of chance, including poker, casino, and slots. Betsson also got a betting licence, and both are valid for seven years.

Betsson will launch first online poker site in Greece

Stockholm-based gaming company works to launch online poker under newly acquired Greek licences. The Hellenic Gaming Commission started the licencing process after a new set of laws kicked in 2019, replacing temporary ones that big igaming names held so far. Although the igaming market is under a heavy tax burden, Betsson saw an opportunity to expand its business to the lucrative Greece market.

HGC issued a licence for betting and game of chance to Betsson, which translates to a high 5 million Euros fee. As a result, Betsson will now have regulated offers and a new localized brand operating under Betsson. Using the GR domain will provide unique content in the native Greek language, ranging from sports betting to real money online casino websites. The company especially emphasized the introduction of online poker, although it might not be ready at the launch time.

Online poker is a massive part of the growth and success of the igaming market globally, which now accounts for up to $60 billion annually.

Creating a market

As a predominantly tourist country, Greece has numerous land-based casinos where you can play poker. And, since the change in the laws, there are still no specialized platforms for online poker.
