What to Expect
at the World Poker Tour
The great thing about the World Poker Tour is that anyone
can compete in it. If you have $10,000 to risk, you can
be seated at the table with any poker pro. Even if you don’t,
you can play a satellite for a much more affordable sum
to earn your seat. One pokerstars
bonus for example, sends thousands of players to different
WSOP events every year. But what about the World
poker Tour? Here’s what you can expect if you earn a
seat to the main event.
No Pro in Seat 2:
Although world
poker tour articles might give you the impression that
you will see pros all over the place, that doesn’t mean
one will sit at your table. Known poker professionals still
represent a relatively small percentage of poker players,
and hundreds of people sign up for a shot at glory. You
might sit with a pro in the first round, but you just as
easily may not.
Of course, the more pros you will find yourself clashing
with, the longer you survive. If one of the seats is empty
for a long time, don’t be surprised if it belongs to a known
pro trying to make a grand entrance.
Lots of Chips:
Most lower buy-in tournaments give you between 1,000-3,000
chips. A main event will start you with 10,000, maybe even
20,000. If you’ve never had this many chips before, don’t
go crazy.
Size your bets relative to the blinds and the pots. Don’t
start throwing chips in on every hand just because you can.
Those big chip stacks dwindle faster than you would think.
A Long Haul:
You can double up on the first hand of a WPT event and still
be gone by the end of the day. With 90-minute rounds and
big chip stacks, anything can happen. Try to keep an even
head, whether you are way ahead in chips or struggling to
keep a short stack in play. |
